Faculty of Mathematical Sciences

Overview

Mathematical discipline including the mathematical teacher, pure mathematics and applied mathematics started its activity at the Faculty of Sciences since 1994. In 2005, with the approval of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences of Shahrood University of Technology (separated from the Faculty of Basic Sciences), was established composed of two pure mathematics and applied mathematics, statistics groups. This faculty has the scientific and research potential strength after twenty years of formation with various undergraduate, MA and Ph.D. degrees and recruiting of the required faculty. Currently, 30 faculty members are engaged in the training and education of 221 Bachelor, 196 MA and 32 Ph.D. students. The fields of study at the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences are: 1- Mathematics and Applications (Bachelor) 2- Pure Mathematics (Bachelor-Master-Ph.D.) 3- Applied Mathematics (Bachelor-Master-Ph.D.) 4. Mathematical Statistics (Bachelor-Master-Ph.D).

The Faculty of Mathematical Sciences has been active in Iranian Mathematics competition under the supervision of the Iranian Mathematical Society over the past years and has achieved silver and bronze medals and obtained ranks of 8th to 10th place among more than 36 universities in the country. The successful hosting of the 34th Iranian Mathematical Conference in Shahrivar 2003 is one of the honors of this faculty. At present, the Journal of the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences with the title "Journal of Algebraic Systems" is published at the Shahrood University of Technology with the degree of "scientific-research".

The faculty hosts over 200 postgraduate students supervised by academics in a wide range of Mathematical fields including:

  • Graph Theory and Combinatorics
  • Optimization (Operations Research)
  • Numerical Analysis
  • Financial Mathematics
  • Cryptography and Coding Theory
  • Geometry and Topology
  • Algebra
  • Mathematical Analysis
  • Statistics

The M.Sc. program is typically a two-year program. The students are selected through the associated national entrance exam among the applicants. Furthermore, the CE faculty admit certain applicants among the top 10% of the B.Sc. graduates to the M.Sc. program.

The admission of four-year Ph.D. program for candidates has a similar procedure. It requires evidence of high-quality research capabilities, as well. The faculty is currently hosting 26 Ph.D. candidates. Students in both M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs must submit a thesis as partial fulfilment of their programs.  The research work of the candidates’ theses is usually carried out in the research groups that are supervised by the faculty members.
