Overview

The Faculty of Chemistry is one of the oldest faculties at the Shahrood University of Technology, established in 1994. The faculty offers a broad range of diverse high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate programs focusing on Organic, Inorganic, Analytic and Physical chemistry.

Chemistry is the science of matter and compounds. It is involved with the understanding of the properties of the elements, how they interact with one another, and how the combination of these elements gives compounds that may undergo chemical changes to generate new compounds.

Chemistry is a part of our life in all directions. From food to fuels, pharmaceuticals to pesticides, natural compounds to synthetic materials, paint to fragrant and so on. The pivotal mission of the faculty is focused on developing new catalytic protocols with higher efficiency in producing compounds, separation and determination of natural and synthetic compounds (drugs, dyes, pollutants and so on) and computational chemistry. The specific role of chemistry faculty is to provide an academic environment with a high-quality education tending to modern scientific needs of the society. All faculty members and researchers work hard together to achieve these goals and to keep the faculty recognized as a leading institute nation-wide and internationally.

The scientific activities at the chemistry faculty are led by nationally recognized faculty members in various diverse major fields of chemistry. Currently, there are 15 academic members serving the education and research responsibilities at the chemistry faculty. The faculty hosts over 100 postgraduate researchers in 4 major fields of Organic, Inorganic, Analytical and Physical chemistry to efficiently extend and support the associated research activities, as well.

Over 200 students are currently enrolled in B.Sc. program in the field of pure chemistry. The B.Sc. students are selected among participants at the National University Entrance Exam. In addition to a deep understanding of various theoretical aspects of chemistry, the undergraduate programs address the experimental aspects of the real-world chemical challenges. Currently, 4 educational and 7 research laboratories at the chemistry faculty support the educational and research programs. The laboratories are led by the faculty members and instructors. They are equipped with up-to-date equipment and facilities.

The chemistry faculty hosts over 100 postgraduate students supervised by academics in a wide range of chemical fields including:

  • Nano-chemistry
  • Solid state chemistry
  • Electro-chemistry
  • Computational chemistry
  • Application of nano-particles in micro-extraction and separation methods
  • Preparation and application of sensors
  • Preparation of nano-catalysts
  • Preparation of nano-ceramics
  • Preparation of nano-composites
  • Synthesis of heterocyclic compounds
  • Synthesis of organometallic compounds
  • Synthesis of polymers

The M.Sc. program is typically a two-year program. The students are selected through the associated national entrance exam among the applicants. Furthermore, the chemistry faculty admit certain applicants among the top 10% of the B.Sc. graduates to the M.Sc. program.

The admission of four-year Ph.D. program for candidates has a similar procedure. It requires evidence of high-quality research capabilities, as well. The faculty is currently hosting 13 Ph.D. candidates. Students in both M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs must submit a thesis as partial fulfilment of their programs.  The research work of the candidates’ theses is usually carried out in the research groups that are supervised by the faculty members.

Industrial Collaboration

The chemistry faculty has joint industrial based collaboration programs with certain industries since 2015. Making chemical knowledge accessible to the industry has been considered as a part of our mission. This job is being fulfilled by means of training skilful and knowledgeable chemists as well as various industrial collaborations to support the needs of them for high-tech solutions and analysis. The industrial partners (IRAN Alumina Co. and others) participate in practical education by making it possible for the graduate students of the chemistry faculty to acquire practical experience at the site through their projects.

International Collaboration

International collaborations are one of the keys to achieving the mission of the chemistry faculty. Establishing and extending such collaborations are actively encouraged by the authorities. Faculty members and postgraduate researchers are involved in international cooperation. Faculty members are highly encouraged to visit universities worldwide as part of their sabbatical or research leave programs. Furthermore, Ph.D. candidates are granted a short academic visit to other international universities as part of their research fulfilment. The joint research projects can be considered as another aspect of the international collaborations of the chemistry faculty.
