Faculty of Computer Engineering

Overview

The Faculty of Computer Engineering (CE) is one of the most competitive engineering faculties at the Shahrood University of Technology, established in 2005. The faculty offers a broad range of diverse high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate programs focusing on software engineering, hardware engineering, information technology and artificial intelligence. Furthermore, a research stream in challenging fields in artificial intelligence and computer engineering is being conducted at the faculty by postgraduate students and faculty members.

Computer engineering is a crucial part of contemporary complex industrial systems including several emerging engineering disciplines and technology. The pivotal mission of the faculty is focused on developing the engines of economic growth in a digital society. The specific role of CE faculty is to provide an academic environment with a high-quality engineering education tending to modern industrial needs of the society.

The other mission of the CE faculty tends to perform high-quality theoretical and applied research to advance the state-of-the-art technology solutions. Such research aims to support high-tech industry in the region and to contribute to the global advancement of technology in relevant domains. All faculty members and researchers work hard together to achieve these goals and to keep the faculty recognized as a leading institute nation-wide and internationally.

The scientific activities at the CE faculty are led by internationally recognized faculty members in various diverse major fields of computer engineering. Currently, there are 14 academic members serving the education and research responsibilities at the CE faculty. The faculty hosts over 70 postgraduate researchers to efficiently extend and support the associated research activities, as well.

Over 500 students are currently enrolled in B.Sc. program in 3 major fields of computer engineering consists of computer architecture, software engineering, and information technology. The B.Sc. students are selected among participants at the National University Entrance Exam. In addition to a deep understanding of various theoretical aspects of computer engineering, the undergraduate programs address the experimental aspects of the real-world engineering challenges. Currently, 8 educational laboratories and 6 research labs at the CE faculty support the educational and research programs. The laboratories are led by the faculty members and instructors. They are equipped with up-to-date equipment and facilities.

The CE faculty hosts over 70 postgraduate students supervised by academics in a wide range of computer engineering fields including:

  • Signal processing
  • Image and Video Processing
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Formal modelling
  • Deep learning
  • Wireless sensor networks
  • Ad hoc networks
  • Supervisory control
  • Reinforcement learning
  • Robotics
  • Cryptography and System Security
  • Big Data, Data Mining, and Bioinformatics
  • Pattern Analysis, and Machine learning
  • Information theory and coding

The M.Sc. program is typically a two-year program. The students are selected through the associated national entrance exam among the applicants. Furthermore, the CE faculty admit certain applicants among the top 10% of the B.Sc. graduates to the M.Sc. program.

The admission of four-year Ph.D. program for candidates has a similar procedure. It requires evidence of high-quality research capabilities, as well. The faculty is currently hosting 26 Ph.D. candidates. Students in both M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs must submit a thesis as partial fulfilment of their programs.  The research work of the candidates’ theses is usually carried out in the research groups that are supervised by the faculty members.

Industrial Collaboration

The CE faculty has joint industrial based collaboration programs with certain major national industries since 2008. Making engineering knowledge accessible to the industry has been considered as a part of our mission. This job is being fulfilled by means of training skilful and knowledgeable computer engineers as well as various industrial collaborations to support the needs of companies for high-tech solutions and systems. The industrial partners participate in practical education by making it possible for the students of the CE faculty to acquire practical experience at the site through internship opportunities and graduate projects. In recent years, the faculty has been tied with several major industries through collaboration agreements including: Niroo research institute (NRI), SAIran Electronics Ins., Khejeh-Nasir research institute.

International Collaboration

International collaborations are one of the keys to achieving the mission of the CE faculty. Establishing and extending such collaborations are actively encouraged by the authorities. Faculty members and postgraduate researchers are involved in international cooperation. Faculty members are highly encouraged to visit universities worldwide as part of their sabbatical or research leave programs. Furthermore, Ph.D. candidates are granted a short academic visit to other international universities as part of their research fulfilment. The joint research projects can be considered as another aspect of the international collaborations of the CE faculty. Frequently invited talks by the pioneers in various relevant fields are organized by the CE faculty. The role of the students can be further highlighted by noting the active representations of student branches of international institutes/associations related to the electrical and computer engineering such as Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Honors and Awards

  • Computer Olympiads awards
  • ACM contest awards
  • Several national patents
